Decision Making Sticks
I’ve made decision making sticks with all the wonderful ideas you gave me for fun things we can do with Bert. They’re a simple idea but will give us a kick up the bum to get out and enjoy our time together. I have made them my New Years resolution.
I’ve seen people use decision making sticks for date night ideas but they are adaptable and you could make them for family days out.

Decision Making Sticks
All you need is a bunch of wooden coffee stirrers/ice lolly sticks and some different colour felt tip pens. I picked four colours and separated the ideas into four categories to identify the level of time required/cost involved.
Colour one end of the stick and write the relevant idea on it. Pop the sticks in a container, ensuring that only the colour is visible and not the writing. Take it in turns to pick a stick at random and enjoy your adventure. I’ve made more green and blue sticks as I know we get more opportunities to go on shorter walks.
Categories
Green- Under 10 miles drive from home/no cost (apart from petrol). These are walks that can be done on a nice evening after work or if we have a couple of hours spare at the weekend. I’ve included our favourite walks around Thorsby Hall, Sherwood Pines, Hardwick Hall and a few new ones to spice things up!
Blue- Full day/some cost involved. When we have more time at the weekend and can drive further. We can take a picnic or find a dog friendly cafe/pub so the cost is a little higher. Our Rock ‘n’ Roll lifestyle includes a National Trust membership so I have included beautiful properties we have visited before and some new ones. Along with trips to the coast, Peak District, Chatsworth Estate and Derby Dales.
Pink- Weekend away/Moderate to Expensive cost. Gary has this idea to camp when neither of us have done it since we were kids and we are more about luxuries than roughing it! I have compromised for the sake of the boys and agreed to glampling in a pod/yurt/teepee. I’ve managed to find prices from £25 a night so it’s not much more than a pitch fee with electric hookup! I’ve put down locations we love and places we have talked about but never got round to visiting.
Coral- Weekend away in a cottage or Log Cabin. This is obviously the longest duration and most expensive. We love Forest Holidays and National Trust Holidays, they’re normally in stunning locations with an abundance of walks and the accommodation standards are top notch. Hoseasons also have a good range of lodge and cottage holidays.
First Adventure
We decided to start today as Bert is much better than he was last week. He also needed a nice walk to perk him up and aid his recovery. I picked the first stick today and selected a walk around Hardwick Hall. It was certainly an adventure, the mud was so deep! Ralph’s legs disappeared giving his little pot belly a mud bath. Gary nearly lost a boot from the vacuum caused by the sludge and I’m still removing thorns from my palm when I slipped in the mud and landed in the bramble hedge. Despite the mishaps it was a fun walk and it was nice to see so many happy and friendly people out on New Year’s Day.
Now it’s time to chill in front of the fire! Look at those muddy bellies ?
